Cooking smoke and grease

Protein smoke from cooking — particularly burned or overcooked food — leaves a greasy, particularly foul-smelling residue that coats surfaces in the kitchen and spreads through adjacent spaces. It requires wet cleaning with degreasers before any odour treatment can be effective.

What Does NOT Work for Eliminating Smoke Smell

Before covering what does work, it is worth being clear about common approaches that do not actually eliminate smoke odour:

  • Air fresheners and sprays — these mask odour temporarily but do nothing to remove the underlying compounds from surfaces
  • Scented candles — same problem as air fresheners, and burning anything in a smoke-affected space adds combustion byproducts
  • Opening windows — ventilation helps but does not remove compounds already bonded to surfaces; it dilutes airborne odour only
  • Baking soda on carpets — mildly absorptive for surface-level odour but does not penetrate into wall cavities, insulation, or deep into flooring
  • Painting over affected walls — paint applied over smoke-contaminated surfaces without proper cleaning and priming will allow odour compounds to bleed through within weeks
  • Ozone machines from hardware stores — consumer-grade ozone generators are significantly underpowered for serious smoke odour situations and can leave residual ozone that is itself a health hazard if the space is re-occupied too soon

What Actually Works: Step-by-Step Smoke Odour Elimination

Step 1 — Remove the source material

If any materials are heavily contaminated with smoke residue — carpet, drapes, soft furnishings, damaged drywall — and cannot be effectively cleaned, they need to be removed from the property entirely. Attempting to treat heavily saturated materials in place rarely achieves full odour elimination.

Step 2 — Clean all hard surfaces with a smoke-specific cleaner

Walls, ceilings, and hard floors need to be washed with a cleaning solution designed to break down smoke residue. Trisodium phosphate (TSP) diluted in water is one of the most effective options for heavy smoke contamination on hard surfaces — it cuts through soot and smoke film effectively. Work from top to bottom — ceiling first, then walls, then floors — to avoid re-contaminating cleaned surfaces.

Step 3 — Clean or replace HVAC filters and duct surfaces

If smoke has entered your HVAC system — which it almost always does in any significant smoke event — the system will continue to circulate smoke particles and odour compounds every time it runs. Replace all air filters immediately. For serious smoke events, professional HVAC duct cleaning is necessary to remove deposited soot and smoke compounds from inside the ductwork.

Step 4 — Apply a stain-blocking primer to walls before repainting

If walls and ceilings were exposed to significant smoke, do not apply finish paint directly. Use a shellac-based or oil-based stain-blocking primer (products like Zinsser BIN or Kilz Original) before any finish coat. These primers seal smoke compounds into the surface and prevent bleed-through. Water-based primers are not effective for heavy smoke contamination.

Upholstered furniture, mattresses, drapes, and rugs absorb and hold smoke compounds tenaciously. Items with heavy saturation — particularly foam cushioning — often cannot be fully decontaminated and are better replaced.

Clothing and machine-washable fabrics can often be laundered with a cup of white vinegar added to the wash cycle, followed by a standard detergent wash. Air dry if possible rather than using the dryer until the odour is confirmed gone.

Eliminating Smoke Smell by Room and Surface

Walls and ceilings

Clean with TSP solution or smoke odour cleaner, allow to dry fully, apply shellac-based primer, then repaint. Do not skip the primer step.

Carpet and rugs

Vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA-filter vacuum first. Apply a baking soda treatment and leave overnight, then vacuum again. For significant smoke contamination, professional hot water extraction is recommended. Severely affected carpet underlays may need to be replaced even if the carpet itself can be cleaned.

Wood surfaces and furniture

Wipe down with a white vinegar and water solution. For finished wood, Murphy’s Oil Soap is effective. Unfinished or porous wood may need to be sanded and resealed to fully eliminate embedded odour compounds.

HVAC and air ducts

Replace all filters. Have ducts professionally cleaned if smoke was drawn through the system. Consider running the system with new filters and an activated charcoal filter insert for several weeks after remediation.

Books, documents, and electronics

Seal these in a container with activated charcoal packets or baking soda for several days. Avoid using ozone near electronics as it can degrade rubber components and connectors.
